The Essay+ Rating Scale: 1-5.......................... We call the Essay + Rating scale the Sleeper-Screamer Scale, because ultimately all writing falls into one of those two categories. Either it puts you to sleep, or it forces you to pay attention, not in an in-your face kind of way, but through the compelling force of the writing. Our goal
is to move your writing into the screamer category.
Come to think of it, your college essay may need to scream to get through
the fatigue/boredom barrier of admissions' officers.

(Best) |
TheScreamer + essay is a page turner because it is fundamentally interesting. The writer comes across as someone the reader would like to meet. Having an interesting story to tell, however, does not make the story interesting. The skill is in the telling. |
Interesting detail, focused, audience awareness, fluent, clear; appropriate word choice; ideas developed |
| The Screamer is not quite the caliber of the Screamer + but it is focused and has a user friendly organizational pattern. The portrait of the writer is adequate though not as complete or as interesting as the Screamer +. The word choice is skillful and the sentences are fluent; the author comes across as an interesting person. | Fluent, easy to follow, interesting detail; audience awareness | |
| The Snorer gives a fitful glimpse of the author. This essay is like a partially developed photo. Half the features are coming through, but unfortunately the effort is marred by the shadows of awkward structure, inaccurate word choice, partially developed concepts and wandering narrative | Partially developed; awkward structure; wandering narrative | |
| The
Sleep Walker ,as the term suggests, doesn't know where it's going.
Confusion reigns here. No clear sense of direction, no focus, awkward sentences,
no sense of audience, and not much insight into the writer's life or personality. |
Confused, wandering; awkward sentence structure | |
(Weak) |
The Sleeper. This is is simply a collection of words that bears little resemblance to a coherent essay. As with # 2, Sleep Walker, there is confusion, awkward sentences, no sense of direction or organization, no awareness of audience, and no insight into the writer's life or character. | Confused, wandering narrative, lack of organization |
